Variable Frequency Drive
A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is an instrument used to control and regulate the speed and torque of an appliance through the variance of speed and voltage. VFDs are used in a variety of machinery ranging from small appliances to heavy mill drives and compressors. Industrial motors consume around 25 percent of the worlds electricity supply; therefore VFDs would be of particular value in terms of electricity and cost savings.

Of these three, three-phase motors tend to be the most frequently used as they are the most economical. The Controller has three components: the rectifier bridge converter, a direct current link, and inverter. Advances in the controller have seen great improvements in the current ratings and switch frequency of power devices. The operator interface enables the operator to start and stop the motor and adjust the operating speed as necessary. Additional functions include reversing, automatic control and manual speed adjustment.
